I started practicing yoga so long ago, can’t remember my first yoga class but I do remember when it really made a mark on me.
It was the late 90’s, I was living in Trinidad and was working out at the BP gym on the Savannah with my friend Pat Paul. The gym started offering yoga classes with a beautiful teacher, she was foreign and I believe her name was Susan. I really enjoyed her classes and started making yoga a regular part of my exercise routine. Her husband got transferred and she left much to our dismay as there were really no-one teaching yoga back then in Trinidad. Fortunately, Karen Stollmeyer, decided to move back to Trinidad and started a beautiful practice of what she called Integral Hatha yoga.
I was soon practicing 3 times a week with Karen and then signed up to do her teacher training. My intention was just to deepen my practice and definitely was never going to teach. To pass the certification, we had to teach a class, I remember being so nervous and timid. I soon grew to love teaching and specialized in teaching children. With my soul sister, Diana Joseph, we started an experimental yoga program at our children’s school, Samaan Yoga.
We spent a term teaching all the classes from Kindergarten to Gr 12’s, what a rewarding experiment, the feedback from the children at the end was so touching. We continued teaching certain classes for a while after that. I also introduced yoga to Holistic School.
As a doula, I had a special connection with pregnancy, and of course wanted to share the benefits of yoga with pregnant mums. I ran a prenatal yoga class, twice a week out of Mamatoto Birthing Center and at Akasha Studios. A lot of mums went onto to have me as their doula, creating some unique and beautiful bonds with a few mums for whom I was their support for every birth.
I also shared a weekly practice at our home in Fondes Amandes, St. Anns for many years. It was really just a small group of close friends getting together to practice but by leading the practice it allowed me to grow in my teaching and build my confidence.
