Lorio trained as a doula over 15 years ago to help support mothers and families during the labor. A doula is a caregiver who supports the mother before, during and after child birth. She is there to respect the mother’s wishes and give positive and practical support. Having assisted nearly 100 mothers to birth, Lorio is always uplifted, inspired and in awe at the birthing process and how our bodies transform to welcome this new life into the world. For clarity, a doula isn’t trained to give medical support. The support can be physical (touch, massage….) and emotional. A doula brings support to the couple, in the sense where the father is relieved to have support. Often first time fathers are quite disoriented at seeing their loved one in pain and feel helpless. The role of the doula could be to encourage the father to support the mother, and remind him of some of the positions they may have learnt in birthing classes. The doula brings a calm, knowledgeable and experienced presence. Studies have proven that a doula’s presence improves the family’s overall experience of childbirth, prevents unnecessary C sections and overall necessitates less medical interventions.
