I was always fascinated by the story of my great grandfather, Joseph Salvatori, living in Mille Fleurs, this big house on the Savannah, and then a whole building in Port of Spain, the Salvatori building and his medals and connections to French Presidents. Who was this guy? Short, Corsican, only 4’8”, red hair, Corsican, supposedly uneducated but sitting at the table of presidents. He commandeered quite a lot of respect and admiration from his grandchildren, my mother and her brothers.
When I was introduced to Plantain, tellers of family stories, I was confident that these would be the ones to bring Joseph Salvatori’s story to life and fill in those gaps that were haunting me. They did an amazing job of digging up the stories, albeit staying within the confines of what was available and not much of Joseph’s past was written.
Most of his personal effects burnt in the fire in Port of Spain in 1957.
The intention was to offer the family the story of our ancestor and keep the publication internal but the feedback from the younger generation, including my children, was: - this is a fantastic story and “mum, you should make this into a movie”!
Plantain Publishing and I got together and published in 2021 the book they had written for the family, Salvatori: Un Corsu A Trinidad
This is now my inspiration, with more research and interviews to write a script for a feature film on the story of Joseph Salvatori. I entered the script to the Nostos Screenwriting Retreat in 2022 and was selected to participate but had to decline due to other professional commitments.
The script is in development and I plan to finish writing it by end 2022 and start looking to put it into production.
